Key Project Highlights
Folsom Intake
Drill Tech was subcontracted with Vortex Marine Construction to drill eighteen vertical shafts having a minimum depth of 17’ into weathered bedrock, and install concrete filled steel pipe piles into the shafts for supporting a new intake structure. All of the drilled shafts and piles were installed from barges, and of which twelve were installed underwater.
Pier 27 – James R. Herman Cruise Terminal
This marine project in downtown San Francisco involved the reconstruction of an existing pier into a world class modern cruise terminal to meet the increasing passenger and security demands of the industry. The pier is designed to handle vessels up to 1200 feet long. As the marine subcontractor to Turner Construction, Vortex’s work included all structural rehabilitation of this 14 acre pier and plaza facility site. The actual work included significant demolition of deteriorated concrete, including shoring and bracing. Precast concrete piles up to 175’ long were driven through the deck and tied into the pier for additional capacity, and reconstruction of concrete beams and slab was completed. New utilities were installed beneath the pier, and concrete boarding ramps were constructed with steel passenger gangways. Additionally, complete mooring and fender systems were installed along the docking side of the pier.
